The Benefits vs. Harms of Cannabis Education

There is much said about educating people on the harms of cannabis.

According to some scientific studies that are prolific in the media, cannabis can lead to psychosis – especially in youth. It can also be harmful to the developing brain and should not be used by those under the age of 25.

There are other scientific studies that show these results are inconclusive and other studies that show the opposite, though they receive very little media coverage.

Reducing the Supply Shortage of Cannabis, Post-Legalization

There are many predictions of a chronic cannabis shortage when it is legalized. No matter how smooth the provincial governments pave the way, it all ends with out-of-stock producers holding up the line.

Canada Looks to B.C., Alberta After Ontario Drops the Ball on Legalization

The Ontario government has unveiled it’s plan to regulate cannabis in the province in July 2018. Lawmakers believe they can eliminate the black market by opening 40 government run stores and a mail order delivery in the first year, followed by 40 more stores in 2019 and 150 by 2020. They will shut down all illegal dispensaries before the official stores are open. The local neighbourhood dealer better be well prepared for all the business that will come their way.

The Grey Market Adds Legitimacy To Licensed Producers

A significant percentage of patients (42%) reported accessing cannabis from illegal/unregulated sources in addition to access via LPs, and over half (55%) were charged to receive a medical recommendation to use cannabis, with nearly 25% paying $300 or more.

We hear how well Licensed Producers (LP’s) are doing in the legal medical cannabis market, how stocks are going up, the market is expanding, and everything is rosy and fine. But there are many problems with the legal market that are being masked by the entrenched grey market. The proof is summarized in a paper entitled, “Medical Cannabis Access, Use, And Substitution For Prescription Opioids And Other Substances: A Survey Of Authorized Medical Cannabis Patients,” published recently in the International Journal of Drug Policy. Transitioning to Legal Cannabis

Some people who are experienced with cannabis see a huge need to help educate the public and politicians about this plant because fear seems to abound everywhere. There is still so much misinformation coming from some authoritative sources, and unravelling decades of propaganda is no small task. Most people don’t know that cannabis has never caused a single death in thousands of years of use, and that by over-regulating it to address perceived harms could be a futile effort in the face of a long established illegal market that has been around for decades.

Throughout our lifetimes, cannabis has been a part of society in the worst possible way – total prohibition, which in reality means, no rules, anything goes. Ten and twelve year old children buy, sell and smoke it, and have for decades. Now the rhetoric to strictly regulate and restrict access, implies we will be under an extreme opposite cannabis regime, albeit, a legal one
